Wilderness First Responder

March 7-15, 2009
Schedule:
March 7-15, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, plus 2 night sessions
80 hours / 2-year certification

This is a nationally recognized program that is essential for anyone who spends significant time in remote places or the outdoor career professional who leads trips in the backcountry. This course is fast paced and engaging. You’ll spend half your time outside the classroom practicing your skills during hands-on mock rescue scenarios. WMI’s curriculum encompasses a wide range of topics including long term patient care, wound management, straightening angulated fractures, reducing dislocations, administering medications, litter packaging and evacuation techniques. You will complete this course with the skills and confidence you need to manage backcountry patients in extreme environmental conditions for several days in a wilderness setting. Wilderness First Aid with CPR Option

WFA Course

Fast paced and hands-on, this two-day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who work and recreate in the outdoors. WMI’s curriculum is unique and includes many advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction, focused spinal assessment and epinephrine administration. In just two days you’ll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make decisions in emergency situations. This course is ideal for park rangers, trip leaders, camp staff, and outdoor enthusiasts, who wish to be prepared for situations that require treating/managing a patient for a few hours in a park, camp or wilderness setting until help can arrive. This course is designed specifically to recertify current Wilderness First Responders. Students will review the WFR curriculum, participate in hands-on scenarios that will refresh and sharpen their skills. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions based on your real life experiences and challenge yourself in mock rescue drills. This course will emphasize decision making, treating and evacuating trauma/medical patients as you learn about the latest techniques and protocols in Wilderness Medicine. You must possess current WFR certification from WMI, SOLO, NOLS, WMAA or WPT to recertify through this course. Click here for more information.

Lodging During The Course

Lodging in our cabins is offered for additional fee, see Course Info forms above for more information. At this time we do not allow camping at Camp Broadstone. There are a number of camping options close by that can be easily found by visiting www.highcountryhost.com and www.vallecrucis.com for more information. Footsloggers Outdoors is a good source for information on local tent camping (828-262-5111).

Weather

Even though it will technically be spring, please be prepared for winter weather. Follow the packing suggestions in your confirmation packet and see Ray's Weather before your class.

Directions

For those who live locally or are staying in Boone - at the Wendy's take Hwy 105 south for about 5 miles to the light at the Ham Shoppe. Turn right onto Broadstone Road (the same road as the original Mast General Store) towards Valle Crucis. Camp is about 1.3 miles down Broadstone Road. Our entrance is the first left after you drive under the footbridge that spans Broadstone Road and it is marked with a big wooden sign. The lodge is to your left as you reach the parking area.
