Forecast Last Updated at Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 11:19AM

Couple Quiet Days

Outside of the sheltered valleys a brisk northwest wind kept temperatures from totally bottoming out this morning. Tomorrow morning is similar (some wind, not as much), but I expect it to be a couple of notches colder. High pressure passing to our south the next couple of days promotes quiet weather. However, another big southeastern storm system gets into gear Friday. Rain arrives late Thursday night, picks up the pace Friday, and light rain lingers Saturday.

Forecast Discussion

The weather map is pretty quiet for a few days giving us a chance to completely dig out. High pressure is at the helm through Thursday. Nighttime ingredients are good, but not pristine, for radiational cooling conditions. A northwest wind will once again keep temps from bottoming out except for sheltered valley locations. Not complaining :-).

A vigorous storm systems ejects from Oklahoma/Texas Thursday and heads in our direction. Clouds thicken Thursday with rain arriving late Thursday night. We'll have to keep a watch on the potential for a brief spell of freezing rain in the predawn hours Friday. Otherwise it's all rain and a good one at that Friday. Light rain hangs around Saturday and the storm total rainfall will be 1"-2" making a mess with the combination of melting snow. Stream flooding could be a problem.

Drying commences Sunday. High pressure builds from the Midwest early next week and temperatures hang around the seasonal category.

For a historical perspective... after searching through all the December snow data for Boone this last event is now the biggest December snow on record. The 18.5" of snow over 2.5 days, beat out Dec 26-27, 1969 when we had 18".

Boone December Double Digit Snow events
Dec 8-10, 2018, 18.5"
