Evening Rain, Light Snow Tonight

Low pressure pushing into upstate South Carolina moves to the Mid Atlantic coast Saturday morning. Rain developed this afternoon and continues tonight. As colder air sweeps in behind the low, rain changes to snow showers and flurries after midnight and ends pretty quickly tomorrow morning. It's dusting level stuff at best for most of us, but the higher elevations could pick up a quick inch. Saturday is much colder and windy followed by some moderation Sunday.

Forecast Discussion

We have a couple of quick moving systems to contend with between now and Tuesday. The first one this evening is mostly rain ending as a brief spell of light snow Saturday morning. The second one Sunday night and Monday is mostly snow.

First up, low pressure moving through the Southeast brings a rainy late afternoon and evening. As the low departs to the Mid Atlantic coast Saturday morning colder air invades on a strong northwest wind (you've never read that here before :-). Rain changes to snow showers and flurries overnight and ends first thing Saturday morning. Accumulations of an inch or so favor the higher, westward facing slopes. The rest of of us will do good to squeak out a dusting. Saturday features a big wind, much colder temperatures, and plenty of residual clouds.

Temperatures quickly and briefly moderate back to seasonal levels Sunday before a clipper-type low drops south from the Upper Midwest. Meanwhile, low pressure in the Gulf Sunday jumps to the Southeast coast Monday and the two connect just enough to provide another round of light snow late Sunday night and Monday. It may begin briefly as some light rain Sunday night, but quickly transitions to snow showers after midnight. Snow showers and flurries taper off by Monday evening. It's a little too soon to put an amount on it, but minor accumulations are likely, nothing major.

Cold air holds behind the clipper Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures moderate to seasonal levels Wednesday, and slightly above by next Thursday. In terms of precipitation, next week is quiet after Monday.
